Obituary of Charles Briley

Charles N. Briley Mr. Briley, 90, of Charlotte died on August 5, 2011, surrounded by his children. A memorial service will be held at Myers Park United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2011. Family will receive friends at a reception after the service. Interment was private and prior to the service. Charlie was born in Pitt County, NC, to the late John A. and Agnes Briley on July 27, 1921. He was a graduate of the Greenville, NC City Schools and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a BS degree in Commerce. After service in the Marine Corps during the Second World War, Charlie came to Charlotte where he was employed in public accounting. He became a CPA in 1949. He has been awarded certificates from both the NC Association of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs for forty years membership. He was one of four founding members of the Charlotte Area of CPAs (Charlotte Chapter of the NCCPAs) and its second president. He also served on the Board of Directors of the NC Association of CPAs. He was retired from Ernst & Young (previously Ernst & Ernst) after the merger of S. D. Leidesdorf & Co. where he was a partner in charge of the Charlotte office. Active in the civic life of Charlotte, he was a member of the Charlotte Jaycees serving as its president and a member of the board of directors of the US Jaycees representing the state of North Carolina. He was selected as Charlotte?s Young Man of the Year in 1956. He later became a member of the Charlotte Rotary Club, was elected its President for the year 1966-67 as well several terms on its board of directors. He was a senior member of Carmel Country Club, former member of Charlotte Country Club and DeBordieu Club, Georgetown, SC. He was a member of the Myers Park United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board, the Finance Committee and the Board of Trustees. He served as president of the Luther Snyder Bible Class and its treasurer. He also served on the boards of the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, the United Way, Friendship Trays and the Shepherd Center. He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice (Me-Me) Burnside Briley and three children. Allison B. Matthews and husband, Bobby, of Rock Hill, SC. The Reverend Nath Briley and wife, Amy, of Pickens, SC and Laura B. Ridge and husband, Scott, of Matthews, NC; four grandchildren, Christopher Matthews; Charles III, Caleb and Ethan Briley; Kaylin Ridge and five step-children, Morton L. Church, Jr. and wife, Jayne, of Wilmington, NC, Helen Peery and husband, Dr. Walt Peery, Charlotte, Mary Alice (Bunny) and husband, Ed, of Orinda, CA, Bradford Church and wife, Elisabeth, of Raleigh, NC and John Church and wife, Marta, of Marietta, GA. Six step-grandchildren also survive. His first wife, Joanne Ledbetter, died December 25, 1972.
