Obituary of Muriel Smalley

Muriel W. Smalley Mrs. Smalley, 81, of Charlotte, NC died Friday August 12, 2011 at Carolinas Medical Center. Muriel was born March 14, 1930 daughter of the late Oscar and Amelia Harm Weisskirchen in Bethlehem, PA. Prior to settling in Charlotte in 1989, Mrs. Smalley lived in Philadelphia, PA, Overland Park, KS, Murrysville, PA and Madrid, Spain. After making Charlotte her home in 1989, Muriel became very active in the community volunteering with Adult Literacy through CPCC and with the Boy Scouts of America serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother in Murrysville, PA. She was a member of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church and of the Presbyterian Women and well as serving as a Sunday school teacher in Murrysville, PA. Mrs. Smalley was a homemaker and the proud mother of five sons. She was the heart of the home her boys would say. In addition to her parents Mrs. Smalley was preceded in death by her sister, Arlene Trajber. Survivors include her husband of sixty years, Walter Smalley; sons, Kenneth Smalley and wife , Pam of Charlotte, NC, Mark Smalley and wife, Liz of Weston, FL, Wayne Smalley of Deerfield Beach, FL, Steven Smalley and wife, Vicki of Columbia, MD and Kurt Smalley of Sandpoint, ID; sister, Audrey Frey and grandchildren, Jennifer, Lauren, Nicholas, Joshua, Kara, Sarita, Alan and Enrique Smalley. A service to celebrate her life will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, 7407 Steele Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC 28217.
