Obituary of Sara Auten

Sara M. Auten (Sally) Mrs. Auten of Charlotte, NC died Sunday, August 21, 2011 at her residence. She was born on October 21, 1924 in Gastonia, NC to the late George W. and Ruth J. Mitchell. Sally graduated from Charlotte Memorial School of Nursing in June of 1945 with post graduate work from N.C. State and Appalachian Universities in Health Education and Athletic Training. She retired from Charlotte Mecklenburg School system in June, 1989, having taught Health Occupations at Harding High School for twenty years. Seven of those last twenty years she also served as Athletic Trainer. Prior to her career in education she nursed at the old Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Sally was a member of the American Legion having served in the Army Cadet Corps for 2 1/2 years. She was a member of the American Red Cross and a member of the N.C. Retired Governmental Employees Association. She was an active member of Mouzon United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and served as Chairperson of the Martha /Naomi Circle. Sally was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harrell J. Auten, Jr., her parents, two sisters, Doris Carolyn Mitchell and Betty M. Nivens, and her second parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Auten, Sr. She is survived by a son, Harrell J. Auten, III (Jim) and his wife Cathy, of Raleigh and Charlotte, NC; daughter, Jo Ann Eubanks and her husband, Dale, of Concord, NC. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jennifer Popieniek and husband Sean, Tracy Auten, Cy Eubanks and Mitchell Eubanks, two great-grandchildren, Mason and Phoebe Popieniek; sister, Marjorie Mitchell, of Greer, SC; two brothers-in-law, Eugene C. Auten, and his wife, Margaret of Mooresville, NC and Scott A. Nivens, of Florence, SC. She also leaves behind a host of Mouzon friends, neighbors and many former students and athletes from Harding High School. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Mouzon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Mark Muckler and the Reverend Terry Hammill officiating. The family will receive friends following the service Memorial may be made to Mouzon United Methodist Church at 3100 Selwyn Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28209.
