Maurice Lacy

Obituary of Maurice Lacy

Maurice Leo Lacy, Jr. Mr. Lacy, 78, of Charlotte, the eldest son of the late M.L. Lacy, Sr. and Kate Alice Bigham Lacy, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011. Beloved and reliable as a son, brother, friend and father he leaves us saddened but grateful. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Roy Lacy. A lifelong member of the Berryhill-Steele Creek community, Leo grew up among numerous kin and friends. He was his father?s ready companion in hunting, fishing, gardening and working. Later, when his daughters were young, he spent much time with them in the garden or taking them out to fish with him. Leo was always generous with the fruits of his labor in the garden or his big catch on the lake, sharing with whomever he could. In his lifetime of work at Lacy?s Alignment Service, where he learned at his father?s side, they built a reputation for skill, honesty and fairness. His time there stretched from the late 1940?s to the mid 1990?s when he retired as president and ?Main Man? at what he called ?The shop?. Leo was skillful and intuitive as a mechanic, much as he was with a fishing rod, and he led and taught all with whom he worked by example. Throughout his life he dealt with a progressive deterioration of vision but the feel of a fishing rod in his hand was all he needed. Fishing was Leo?s passion all of his life, even winning a Sportsmaster fishing tournament when he was sixteen. Friends and co-workers became fishing buddies for the fun and the fish he could find. Many stories resulted from his fishing trips and he would laugh every time he told one. He was a great story teller. Those who knew him well, fished and worked with him, share a special bond. Leo leaves behind three grown daughters, Patty Lacy Young, Kathy Lacy Adkins, and Robin Lacy Medlock; two sons-in-law, Eddie Adkins and Ben Medlock; five grandchildren, Chris, Trevor, Will, Lacy and Matthew; a sister, Kitty Lacy Tucker; and a brother, Thomas W. Lacy. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 PM today August, 27, 2011 at The Cathedral of St. Patrick, 1621 Dilworth Rd. East, Charlotte, NC 28203, with The Very Reverend Christopher A. Roux, Celebrant. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Cathedral for one hour prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
