Obituary of Catherine Lawing

Catherine Harrill Lawing Mrs. Lawing, 84, of Charlotte, NC passed away on Friday, September 2, 2011, after a courageous battle against cancer and congestive heart disease. She was born August 24, 1927 in Monroe, NC, the younger of two children of R. Edwin Harrill and Margaret C. Harrill. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and attended Queens College. She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas R. Lawing, in 1948 and they had 3 children. Her family was always Catherine?s main concern. She taught kindness, strength, reverence, laughter, perseverance and love through a life of gracious example. She was an excellent cook, prolific reader, sought-after seamstress, devoted partner and occasional prankster. Together, she and her husband founded T. R. Lawing Realty in 1957 and she took an active role in its operation for more than 20 years. Catherine was a lifetime member of the W. J. Miller Sunday school class which was also the source of many friendships and fond memories. As a den mother, PTA leader, Sunday school teacher, sideline coach, confidante and friend, she helped many small hands catch their first lightning bug or pick their first blackberry. Catherine always made sure her children were ready for school, Sunday school, piano lessons, football practices, camping trips, proms, graduations and weddings. Nanny was devoted to her family and will be deeply missed by many. She is survived by her husband of 63 years (Tommy); their son (Tommy Jr) and daughter-in-law (Dianne); their daughter (Cathy) and son-in-law (Tom); and their daughter-in-law (Nanette); 6 grandchildren - Tripp Lawing (Beth); Joe Rempson (Rachel); Eddie Rempson (Shelley); Courtney Oliver; Ashley Beam (Matt); and Wes Lawing - plus 13 great-grandchildren - Peter Lawing; Avery, Cole & Ryann Rempson; Zee, Zanna, Zoe & Zella Rempson; Cate & Sadie Oliver; Jackson, Davis & Emma Beam - and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family & friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister (Lib), her son (Bob) and one great grandson (Preston). The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon September 4, 2011, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service. A celebration of Catherine?s life will be held 11:00 AM Monday, September 5, 2011, at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Andrew Brown and Rev. Mary John Dye. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park Memorials may be sent to Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, 501 Hawthorne Lane, 28204.
