Obituary of Laura Hillhouse

Laura Dunlap Hillhouse Mrs. Hillhouse, 90, of Charlotte, NC died Friday, September 30, 2011 at Plantation Estates in Matthews, NC. She was born on November 10, 1920 in Anderson, SC, daughter of the late Luther Harmon Dunlap and Florence Dowis Dunlap. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe William (Bill) Hillhouse Sr. in 1995. In the 1950?s and 60?s Mrs. Hillhouse was a teacher and Assistant Director of the First Baptist Church Kindergarten in Greenville, SC. She and her husband moved to Charlotte in 1968. Mrs. Hillhouse was long-time active member of St. John?s Baptist Church. She was active in the WMU at the church a member of the Wendover Garden Club and the Kosmos Book Club. Mrs. Hillhouse is survived by her children, Carole Hillhouse Ellis and her husband, Bob of Greenville, SC, Bill Hillhouse Jr. and his wife Frankie of Tryon, NC, and Cindy Hillhouse Murphy and her husband, Randall of Dallas, TX; nine grandchildren, Susan Ellis Crout and her husband, James, Sherri Ellis Berni and her husband, Brian, Robbie Ellis and his wife, Heather, Laura Hillhouse Shearer and her husband, Travis, Fran Hillhouse Gesing, and her husband, Bernie, Kate Hillhouse McCallum and her husband, David, Caroline Murphy, Scott Murphy and Emily Murphy; eight great-grandchildren, Jay and Laurel Crout, Hannah Ellis, Greer and Allie McCallum, Charlotte and Gray Shearer, and Hill Gesing; and a brother, Edwin F. Dunlap and his wife, Irene of Anderson, SC. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at St. John?s Baptist Church with the Reverend Dennis Foust and the Reverend Larry Watts officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Interment will be private in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. John?s Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204
