Obituary of Clyde Armstrong

Clyde Douglas Armstrong, Jr. Mr. Clyde Armstrong, age 83, of the Prospect Hill Community in Denver, NC and formerly of the Steele Creek Community died peacefully Monday, October 3, 2011. He was surrounded by the love of his family at his passing. Clyde was born August 7, 1928 to the late Julia Holler Armstrong and C. Douglas Armstrong, Sr. He was preceded in death by one sister, Janet Robinson. Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Armstrong will be held at Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver on Friday, October 7, 2011 beginning at 11:00 AM. A second service will be held on the same day at 3:00 PM at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. The family will receive friends and visitors after each memorial service. After graduating from Berryhill Hill School in Charlotte, NC, he attended Clemson University in Clemson, SC. His education was interrupted for service to his Country through the US Army in the Korean War. After his military service he worked nearly 30 years for Charlotte Mecklenburg Utility Department. He and his father also owned and operated Armstrong Grocery and Service, a community favorite from 1941-1965. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church from 1941-to 2009 where he served as Deacon, Elder, Superintendant of Sunday School, and on numerous committees and teams. After relocating to Denver, NC in 2006 he joined Unity Presbyterian Church in 2009. His many interests included gardening, sports, (especially Clemson sports), and music. He sang in the Pleasant Hill Church Choir for 40 years and in the St. James Chorus for about 20 years. He was also a self-educated expert on Civil War History. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 60 years, Mary Leta, son Doug Armstrong (Melinda, Jordan & Casey Putnam) and his son Don Armstrong. The apples of his eye were his two grandchildren, Carrie Armstrong (Steve) of Palmetto, FL and Jason Armstrong of Charlotte, NC. Always by his side was his faithful dog, Coco. The family would like to thank the nursing staff of the Cardiac Care Unit at Presbyterian Hospital Charlotte for their loving care of Mr. Armstrong on his last admission. A special thank you to Mr. Armstrong?s team of Cardiologists, Pulmonologists, and Endocrinologist for giving his family the last precious years of his life. Clyde was a man of God, walking with his Lord every step of his life. His family and friends take comfort in knowing he is now wrapped in the arms of Jesus, waiting for the next win of the Clemson Tigers.
