Obituary of Penelope Bakis

Penelope Zormpala Bakis Mrs. Bakis, 99, of Charlotte, NC, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Huntersville Oaks. Born in Mikro Horio, Evrytania, Greece, she was the daughter of the late Demetrios and Efrosini Polyzos Zormpala. After completing her education in Athens, Greece, she married Angel Chris Bakis, and moved to the U.S., where they owned and operated restaurants for many years. While in Charlotte, they became well-known while operating Angel's Grill, Court Cafe, and Stanley's Grill, from which they retired. In Charlotte, Mrs. Bakis was very active in the Greek Orthodox community as a life¬long member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society of Holy Trinity Cathedral, a founding member of the Daughters of Evrytania and its first treasurer, and longtime member of the Daughters of Penelope, as well as her beloved Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She was predeceased by her husband. She is fondly remembered as a most loving mother and grandmother, always offering compliments, wisdom and kindness to those around her. Her survivors include son Jimmy and wife Cheryl Bakis of Mooresville, NC, daughter Elizabeth and husband Nick Harakas of Spartanburg, SC, and daughter Frances and husband Fr Tom Pistolis of Greenville, SC, as well as 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. The Trisagion and visitation will be Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 10:00 AM until the service hour at 11:30 AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203
