Obituary of Thomas McMillan

Thomas H. McMillan, Jr. MD Thomas H. McMillan, Jr. MD; a physician with the Charlotte Medical Clinic from 1958 - 1992, died November 6, 2011. He was born at Cleveland, Mississippi January 11, 1927, son of the late Thomas H. McMillan and Reba Hamil McMillan. Dr. McMillan attended Chattanooga High School. Upon graduation in 1945, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. After military service, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. He did not graduate from UTC but completed his pre-med requirements and was accepted to medical school. He graduated from Emory University School of Medicine, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical fraternity. He was certified a specialist by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1960 and recertified in 1974. Dr. McMillan participated in the teaching program at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and served as medical director of Hospice at Charlotte during its formative years. After his retirement from Charlotte Medical Clinic, he continued medical practice at several satellite clinics until his mid-70?s. Later in life, he became an avid sailplane pilot, owning two glider aircraft. Dr. McMillan was a Sunday school teacher for young adults and enjoyed trips to the Holy Lands, retracing certain travels of the Apostles. He was active in the American Red Cross blood program and was a six-gallon blood donor. Among other notable events in his life, in July 1940, at age 13, Dr. McMillan rescued a 10-year old girl who was drowning after being swept out by the strong undertow at Fernandina Beach, Florida. A local newspaper declared, ?a child?s life was saved because another child displayed such unusual and splendid courage.? Dr. McMillan mentioned to his family that this event spurred his drive to become a physician and help others. He is survived by his sons, Thomas of San Francisco and Peter of London, England as well as three grandchildren. His wife of 55 years, Alice Rathbun McMillan, predeceased him earlier this year. Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Dilworth United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
