Obituary of Clara Shaffer

Clara B. Shaffer Mrs. Shaffer, 84, of Charlotte, NC died on Friday, January 13, 2012 at Sunrise on Providence Assisted Living. She was born on April 19, 1927 in Pinewood, TN to the late Dale Otto and Annie Maude Bradford and raised by her grandparents, the late Miles P. and Ora Bea Mays. After getting married, she and her husband moved around the southern states with Mr. Shaffer?s career, finally settling in Charlotte in the early 1950?s. Together Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer ran a successful flea market business for several years on Freedom Drive. After retiring they loved to travel all over the United States in their R.V. Mrs. Shaffer loved to work in her yard, do crossword puzzles and was an avid NASCAR fan, rooting for Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch. Mrs. Shaffer was a fighter. In 2005 at the age of 78, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and given 6-12 months to live, this after already being a 28 year breast cancer survivor. In addition to her parents and grandparents, Mrs. Shaffer was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Avery Allen Shaffer and a daughter, Melody S. Dolan. She is survived by her son, Sterry A. Shaffer and his wife, Joanne of Indian Trail, NC; daughter, Autumn Shaffer Broome and her husband, Dennis of Charlotte, NC; son-in-law, Andrew M. Dolan of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; four grandchildren, Brian Avery Shaffer of Norfolk, VA, Nicole L. Shaffer of Indian Trail, NC, Kevin Allen Shaffer of Fairmont, WV and Stefanie Mizrahi and her husband, Jason of Orlando, FL; and great-granddaughter, Paige Melody Mizrahi of Orlando, FL. The family would like give special thanks to the caregivers at Sunrise on Providence Assisted Living for the love and care they gave to Mrs. Shaffer. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Monday evening, January 16, 2012 at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.
