My thoughts and prayers are with Mel's family. I just found out. Mel was truly an inspiration while I worked at Levine Campus and he supported me while I had my own husband's struggle with Multiple Myeloma and his stem cell transplant. His compassion was truly appreciated.

Dr. Gay was TRULY an Inspiration to all of us at CPCC. I worked under his Department, Enrollment & Student Services for 30 years. He was always so kind, caring, and a very geniune person. His contributions and leadership to the college, his colleagues, and to the students will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace My FRIEND. You will be GREATLY missed. May his family always remember him in a loving and special way and cherish the memories of his life in their hearts forever. May God bless and keep each and everyone of you as you go through the time of bereavement

I had always thought I was fortunate to be teaching at CPCC, especially at Levine, with Mel at the helm. My professional and personal contact with him assured me that he had a clear-minded, yet kind, handle on every situation. I was especially grateful for the way in which he supported faculty.
Like so many others, I will miss him.

Dail, Lesley, Kaitlyn and family. Thank you so much for so graciously opening your hearts and allowing us to share in Mel's final moments. I am so grateful, that Mel knew how special he was to us @ Levine. That we had the opporunity to celebrate him while he was still with us. The tree that was planted in his honor will be nurtured the way he nurtured all of us andwill live on as a symbol of his strength and strong roots to CPCC. Mel was so much more than just a mentor and a friend, and co-worker. For me, he was like a father figure. Having lost my dad, Mel helped to fill the void. He inspired and encouraged me to be my best the same way my dad did. I love and miss him so much. In my heart I feel as though my dad was there to welcome Mel home and to thank him for being there for his baby girl. I rejoice in knowing that one day I will see them both again. Thank you again for sharing him with us, his second family. May the peace of God bring you strength in the time ahead. Love you all,
Bernetta

I just wanted to share that Mel was just the most wonderful person. He made me feel so welcome at CPCC when I began as a new full-time instructor in the fall. Even though I only knew Mel for such a short time, his kind example and professional guidance will stay with me throughout my life. He was very special to me and I will miss him greatly.

Mel was one of the first people I met when I began working at CPCC. He was always upbeat and encouraging. He always knew I had been in his office when he retrned to find his cans of Carolina Soda turned upside down. I will miss my friend. Stay encouraged, family, and know that he now rests in the bosom of his Heavenly Father.

The impact and influence this man has contributed to so many people is inspiring and uplifting. I did not know him personally, however I feel like I have gotten to know of him through those who knew him. I would have liked to have known him. My condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

I will never forget the warm welcome I received from Mel - first as a student then an employee. He made such a huge impact on every employee and student at CPCC. I will never forget the beautiful smile and person he was. He is now walking in peace and I pray that he and the Lord wrap their arms around his "special" girls and hold them close at this time. Heaven has a new angel to watch over us. Rest in peace my dear friend and know we will love and miss you.

He will be missed in ways to numerous to mention, but above all his love of God, his family his friends, CPCC and students and staff will be the greatest....I pray that you all will have the peace, comfort and mercy of God, may HE ease every ache and wipe every tear...

Dear Dail, Lesley, and Kailyn (Mel's special girls):
I am so sorry for the passing of a very special, husband, father and grandfather; as well as a much loved friend and colleague at CPCC.
Mel was the glue that held the Levine campus family together and will be greatly missed.
I am so blessed that he touched my life with his friendship. I will never forget his smile, his kindness, his sense of humor and most importantly, him.
I so enjoyed our walks and talks. We talked about our families, our lives, current events, politics and sports; especially his "beloved" Tar Heels. I always knew he would be in Carolina Blue on the weekend game days they were scheduled to play.
I can't think of another person at Levine who so touched the lives of all of us.
Thank you for sharing him with us!
Love, Melodee
