Obituary of Hazel Stokes

Hazel Von Stokes Mr. Stokes, 77, of Charlotte died Thursday, February 16, 2012. Von was born March 3, 1934, in Bishopville, SC son of the late Hazel Lee and Vonceil Huntley Stokes. Mr. Stokes graduated from Central High School class of 1952 and earned his degree in mechanical engineering from NC State University. He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War. Von was a part-time professor for many years at CPCC teaching HVAC to the next generation. A rose enthusiast Von earned many honors and awards, following his passion growing lovely roses and was a lifetime member and judge in the American Rose Society. Von was also a long-time member of Dilworth United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Patricia Jarrell Stokes; daughters, Susan Gardiner and husband, Keith of Trinity, NC, Sharon Lawrence and husband, Larry of Savannah, GA and Shannon Wynne and husband, Charlie of Cary, NC; son, Von Stokes and wife, Mary of Charlotte, NC; brother, DeLeon ?Lee? Stokes and wife, Betsy of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren, Charles and Jordan Gardiner, Ethan and Harrison Wynne and Preston and Wesley Stokes. A service to celebrate his life will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at Dilworth United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service.
