Obituary of Carlton Winter

Carlton Vernon Winter D.D.S., M.S. ?C.V.? Charlotte Dr. Carlton Vernon Winter, 83 died at Harris Hospice of Presbyterian Hospital, May 10, 2012. He was born on June 11, 1928 in Charleston, SC to Ethel Doniphan Winter and Carlton Oliver Winter. Surviving him are his loving wife of 60 years, Carrie Cole Winter; daughter Patti and her husband Barry; son Carlton and his wife Kerry. The grandchildren are Cole Beamer and his wife Kristin; Kathryn Winter and Justin Winter. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Gloria Cole. He graduated from Charleston High School in 1946. While a student he worked at the Gloria Theater, becoming manager at age 14. He was also a captain in the Charleston Reserve Fire Dept. and a member of the SC State Guard. In addition he worked as a welder repairing damaged WWII vessels at the Charleston Naval Yard. He attended the College of Charleston for one year where he joined the Alpha chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. He transferred to the University of SC and graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in Biology which was followed by an additional year of graduate study and a year at the MCSC. He then served 2 years in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge he attended Emory University School of Dentistry and joined Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity, graduating in 1958 with a DDS. Dr. Winter then completed the MS graduate program in Pediatric Dentistry at UNC-CH School of Dentistry. He then began his practice in Charlotte in November 1959 and continued until he retired May 2008, representing 50 years of providing dental care for children in NC. He was a member of the Charlotte Dental Society serving as president, the NC Dental Society serving as trustee, and the American Dental Association. Dr. Winter was a Diplomat of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a member of a number of other honorary dental groups. For more then a decade he headed the dental residency program at Carolinas Medical Center. In 1987 he was elected by his peers to the NC Board of Dental Examiners, serving as president 1993. He served on the Board of the NC Dental Foundation, member the State Health Coordinating Council and numerous other state and local committees related to school health and access to dental care for children. Working with others he helped found and establish the NC Caring Dental Professionals program which provides assistance to members of the dental profession dealing with addiction. In 1998 he received the prestigious Citizenship Award from the NCDS for that work. In December 2011 to acknowledge his long and continuous support, the NCCDP awarded him the group's first Advocacy Award, which will be presented annually and known as the C.V. Winter Advocacy Award. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, sailing, power boating, hunting and skeet with family and friends. He was especially fond of the Cape Lookout Area and SC Low Country. Photography and reading, especially history, were other strong interests. He was a life member of the US Power Squadron and a charter member of the Charlotte group. The service will be 11:00 AM, Monday, May 14, 2012 at Hankins and Whittington Chapel, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC with Rev. Todd McCullough officiating. Interment with military honors will be at 3:00 PM in Lick Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the NC Caring Dental Professionals, PO Box 1258, Southern Pines, NC 28388.
