Obituary of Davis Sloan

Davis W. Sloan, Jr. Mr. Sloan, 93, of Charlotte, NC died following a brief illness on June 4, 2012. He was born October 4, 1918, son of the late Davis Wilson and Aline Young Sloan. Mr. Sloan was a WWII US Army veteran having extensive service in the Pacific Ocean area where he was assigned to the Joint Staff, Admiral Nimitz, CO, Pearl Harbor and Pacific Ocean Area. He was responsible for the accounting of all bulk petroleum products moving into the Pacific Ocean Area, which amounted to over 500,000,000 gallons of petroleum products monthly. Following the war he served as a faculty member of the Duval County School System in Jacksonville, FL and graduated from the College of Advanced Traffic in Chicago, IL. While in Florida, Mr. Sloan attended Arlington Baptist Church where he served in various duties including Chairman of the Board of Deacons and Sunday School Superintendent. Mr. Sloan?s career with A & P Tea Company brought his family to Charlotte where he would enjoy 37 years of service as Traffic Manager for the SE Division of A& P and Director of Transportation for the Carolina Division. He was a former member of First Baptist Church of Charlotte where he served on the Board of Deacons and he was currently a member of Weddington Baptist Church. An avid train buff, Mr. Sloan was a member of the Charlotte Transportation Club, Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Fraternity and the National Railroad Historical Society. He also served in previous years on the Board of Directors for ARP of Charlotte Residential Support Services. Mr. Sloan is survived by his bride of 70 years, the former Miss Doris Bowden; a daughter, Susan Hughes; son, Davis W. Sloan III, all of Charlotte; sister, Mrs. Fred C. Davant of Miami, FL; two granddaughters, Krista Kohlphenson of Greensboro and Emily Miller of Charlotte and four great grandchildren, Logan Keith Miller, Taryn Christine Kohlphenson, Sophie Michelle Kohlphenson and Isaac Sloan Kohlphenson. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 8, 2012 from 12:30 until 2:00 PM and the funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 in the chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
