Obituary of John Burn

John Henry Burn passed away June 8, 2012 at the age of 79 in Charlotte, N.C. Born August 25, 1932, and raised in Charleston, S.C. he was the son of John Ethel Stoll and Elmo McKinley Burn. John served his country in the Korean War. He is survived by his wife Helen Burn, his daughters Debora, with her husband Jack Hutchins, and Melanie, with her husband Curt Radkin, and his granddaughter Megan Radkin. He devoted 39 years of his life assisting others in their recovery of alcohol and drug addiction. In recent years he also volunteered weekly at Presbyterian Hospital?s Behavioural Health Ward carrying a message of hope and recovery to patients with alcohol and/or drug addiction with co-occurring psychiatric illnesses. He was devoted to the belief that both diseases could be treated simultaneously. He helped countless people in recovery from mental illness and addiction. As a loving, giving, honest man whose advice, wisdom and sense of humor were appreciated by family and friends, he will be greatly missed. As a life saving man who understood the true meaning of the word ?abutment?, he will be hard to replace. Graveside services will be held 1:00 pm on Monday, June 11, 2012, at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice, in John?s name.
