Obituary of Nicholas Schiffli

Nicholas William Schiffli ? ?Nick? ? passed away on June 29th, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born in West Palm Beach, Fl. on April 18, 1926, the eldest son of Dr. Oswald F. Schiffli and Regina Sur Schiffli. His family later moved to Clewiston, FL where Mr. Schiffli grew up, and spent the summers in Highlands, NC. He attended Georgia Military School in Milledgeville, GA, graduating in 1944. He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. In 1946 Mr. Schiffli enrolled in Duke University and was in the class on 1950. He married Sybil Cameron of Durham, NC in September 1951. After college Mr. Schiffli first worked at Owens-Corning Fiberglass in Anderson, SC. Later he was employed by Pacific Mills in Lyman, SC which was the beginning of his long career in textile manufacturing. Mr. Schiffli later worked for and became president and owner of Barber Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of spindle tape. Mr. Schiffli was a member of the NC Textile Manufacturing Association, at one time serving on the board, and was an associate member of the Georgia Textile Association, a member of the American Yarn Spinners Association, and the American Textile Manufacturing Institute (ATMI). He was a member of St. Patrick?s Cathedral where he was faithful usher of the 11:00 a.m. mass every Sunday and served on the Parish Council. Mr. Schiffli was an emeritus member of the Charlotte Country Club, a member of the Thursday Club, a former member of Ace of Clubs, and a former member and president of the Carrousel Club. Mr. Schiffli is survived by his wife Sybil Cameron Schiffli; son N. William Schiffli, Jr. and wife Karen; daughter Mary Ann Scarborough and husband John; three grandchildren ? John C. Scarborough, Jr., Mary Cameron Scarborough and Alison Brown Schiffli; brothers John Schiffli and wife Marlene of Highlands, NC and Richard Schiffli of Gainesville, FL; and various cousins, nephews and nieces.
