Obituary of Kay Tatsis

Kay Kofinas Tatsis Kay Kofinas Tatsis passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Presbyterian Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Tatsis was born in Kranidion, Greece and moved to America as a young girl. After her marriage she worked together with her husband, John Tatsis at their restaurant, Kofinas Snack Bar, one of the best loved restaurants in Charlotte's history. A beloved mother, grandmother and mother-in-law, she was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where she remained active and involved her entire life. She served as treasurer and president of the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society and was honored as a 50 year member. She was instrumental in the original formation of the Greek pastry sale, which later became known as the annual Yiasou Greek Festival. She worked tirelessly both in the preparation prior to the festivals and supervised food lines and cashiers for many years. She always served selflessly in her church-related volunteer activities. In 2008, Mrs. Tatsis was honored by the Metropolis of Atlanta, with the Archangel Michael Award for her many years of dedicated service to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She was a member of the Daughters of Penelope, and an avid Canasta player with her close friends since 1950. Her other activities included working as a hospital volunteer as a translator for Greek-speaking patients. She loved to prepare and cook traditional Greek foods and desserts enjoyed by all. Her home was open to many Greek immigrants who were assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Tatsis in establishing better lives in this country. She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Haskell of Charlotte and husband Kevin, Rosie Salis of Walnut Creek, California and her husband Andrew; four grandchildren, John Haskell, Stephen Haskell, Christopher Salis and Nicholas Salis, and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, John G. Tatsis and her parents Jim and Maria Kofinas. The family wishes to thank her loving heath care team, including Dr. Edward McMillan, L.B. Sossoman, Patricia Ringle-Ratte`, Lori Keeler, Arnetta Watkins, Doris Mitchell, Mary Blood and Amber Baker. Her love, strength, and dedication to family and community will be missed greatly, but remembered forever. The family will receive friends at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Saturday afternoon July 7, 2012, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM with the Trisagion and Funeral service starting at 2:00PM. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
