Obituary of Jon Zagar

Jon Stephanie Zagar Steffie Zagar, 58, passed away on August 5, 2012 and has been released from worldly pain and is now taking comfort in the embrace of her Heavenly Father. A native Charlottean, she graduated from Garinger High School. Always ready for conversation, she never met a stranger. She possessed a sharp sense of humor with a quick wit, yet she was very compassionate. She cared deeply for her family and stood strong in her faith. Born at Mercy Hospital, daughter of John Slavko Zagar Jr. and the late, Fae Sykes Zagar, Steffie was soon diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition. She was taken to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for what would turn out to be the first successful open heart surgery on such a young child. After being a survivor for 58 years she came full circle back to Mercy Hospital where she was cared for up to her passing by the excellent staff of the fifth floor ICU and the family wishes to offer sincere gratitude for that care. In addition to her father, Steffie is survived by a brother, Mark J. Zagar and his wife, Linda; a sister, Sheila Dawn Zagar; nephew and niece, Kelly Lee Zagar and Sara Lynn Zagar, all of Charlotte; aunt, Joe Sykes Martin of Mint Hill; and a cousin, Toie Blake and her husband, Perry. A mass to celebrate her life will be held 10:00 AM Thursday at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 4207 Shamrock Drive. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening following a 7:00 PM prayer service at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC.
