Obituary of Mary Plumides

Mary Louzis Plumides Mrs. Plumides, age 73, of Charlotte, NC, died on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at Presbyterian Hospital. She was born August 17, 1939, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late George and Christine Louzis. George and Christine immigrated from Greece and had three children, Mary being the second. She was preceded in death by her husband, John George Plumides and her brother, Emanuel G. Louzis. Mary graduated from Phillips High School in 1957 with honors and attended the University of Alabama where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. After graduating with honors, she began teaching in 1961 at North Roebuck Elementary School. After teaching three years in Birmingham, she married her husband of 42 years and moved to Charlotte. During her time in Charlotte she became deeply involved with her Church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She served as local President of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society. She served as Chapter President and District Governor of the Daughters of Penelope. In 1982, she was appointed by Archbishop Lakovos as a National Board Member to the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society Executive Board and continued to serve as a National Honorary Board member. She was involved with the local Democratic Women?s Organization and served as a local Democratic Precinct Chairman. She was a member of the Council of Christians and Jews and the Opera Guild of Charlotte. She is survived by her son, George John Plumides and granddaughters, Christina and Caroline of Charlotte; her son, John George Plumides II of Charlotte; her son, Gregory John Plumides, wife Anna, and grandchildren, William and Clarkson Plumides of Waxhaw; her sister, Georgia Dikis of Birmingham, Alabama; and many relatives in Birmingham, Alabama. The Trisagion will be held Friday evening September 28, 2012 at 7:00 PM at Holy Trinity Greeek Orthodox Cathedral. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 29, 2012, at the Cathedral. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Agia Elpis Philoptochos Society of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC, 28203.
