Obituary of Jane Ramsey

Born February 13, 1918 in Marietta, GA to Judge J. Harold Hawkins and Irene N. Hawkins, Jane Northcutt Hawkins Ramsey died Wednesday, October 17, age 94. Jane Ramsey was a graduate of Marietta (GA) High School and Duke University ?39 where she met the man she married, Charles W. Ramsey, Jr. ?39 of Charlotte. Jane Ramsey spent the bulk of her adult life in Charlotte as a homemaker and civic volunteer. She served as President of the Mecklenburg Co. PTA during the years of school consolidation that formed the present CMS. She was a tireless advocate for the school system and was instrumental in passage of bond issues that funded construction of several present school buildings. She volunteered with her husband at Charlotte Crisis Assistance Ministries, Friendship Trays, and Charlotte Ambassadors. She was a member of the Charity League of Charlotte, the Appalachian Trail Conference, Piedmont Appalachian Trail Hikers, and the Nature Conservancy. Jane & Charles Ramsey were members of the Duke University Founders Society. Jane Ramsey was a founding member of Providence Baptist Church, and later a member of Providence United Methodist Church. Jane Ramsey is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth R. Berry (James W.); daughter-in-law, Dawn Belk Ramsey; three grandchildren: Micah J. Ramsey, Joseph M. Ramsey of Charlotte and Tina M.B. Hunter (John) of New Palestine, IN. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Charles W. Ramsey, Jr.; three sons, John H. Ramsey, Charles W. Ramsey, III and Peter W. Ramsey. The family wishes to express thanks to Novella Hood, Sarah Wyman, Leslie Carmichael, and Easter Johnson for their loving care which allowed Jane Ramsey to live her entire life in her own home. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Avenue, conducted by The Rev. Harley Dickson. In the manner of a New Orleans funeral and at her request, mourners will gather at the gates of the cemetery to proceed to the gravesite.
