James Tolman

Obituary of James Tolman

James P. Tolman Jim Tolman, 66, died on Friday, November 2, 2012 at his home in Charlotte, NC. He was born in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Thomas Grinley Tolman and Grace Lyon Tolman. A devoted alumnus of Syracuse University, Jim served as a captain in the Air Force during the Viet Nam War, flying a B-57 bomber. An avid skier, tennis player, and golfer in his younger years, later he enjoyed spending time at the cabin at Doe Ridge and making sawdust in his workshop (and sometimes furniture). Jim was an extraordinary man who lived a fine life with great honor and courage. Jim moved to Charlotte from Maryland in 1984 to work for Tomlinson Engineering Company, and then spent 17 great years in management at Warco Construction Company helping to build our booming city. Twenty-five years ago Jim had one of the first kidney transplants at Carolinas Medical Center that enabled him to enjoy life and to meet his grandsons. His family will always be grateful to the family that made the difficult decision to donate their loved one's organs so others could have life. Jim is survived by his wife, Cathy, and their daughters and their families: Brooke and Drew Fiske and sons Xander, Todd and Bradley of Baltimore, MD; Robin and Damon Krieger and sons Wesley and Nate of Baltimore, MD; Meredith and Tony Olan of Banner Elk, NC; sister Connie Semerad and her husband Chuck of Hastings, MI; brother Tom Tolman and his wife Elvira of Mazatlan, Mexico, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews from Maryland's Eastern Shore to the California coast. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 9, 2012 at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203 In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the National Kidney Foundation Charlotte, 4819 Park Road, Suite C, Charlotte 28209, Operation Homefront of NC, 4728 Park Road, Suite A, Charlotte, NC 28209, or Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte 28204, and please consider being an organ donor.
