Obituary of Kathleen Allen

Kathleen Pugh Allen Mrs. Allen, 100, died on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. She was born on April 2, 1912 and grew up in Grays Chapel, NC as one of 15 children of George and Bessie Pugh. Following her graduation from Grays Chapel High School she moved to Greensboro, NC and worked for S.. H. Kress Company. It was in Greensboro that Kathleen met Charles M. Allen. They were married on December 18, 1935. Charles was later transferred to Charlotte by AT&T and Charles and Kathleen remained here for the rest of their lives. The family was comfortable in the Freedom Park neighborhood and joined Avondale Presbyterian Church. Kathleen taught Sunday school for 5 year olds and was active in the Women of the Church. She worked at Ivey?s Department Store in women?s sportswear for 12 years. The family includes daughters, Judy Allen Pick and husband James, Kay Allen Williams and husband Floyd and son Gary Wesley Allen; Grandchildren: Samuel Ronny Cox, Jr., wife Donna and son Briley and grandson Domarion; Mark Allen Cox, wife Tammy and daughter Kelsey; Brooke Allen Perkins, husband Justin and son Aidan; Brandon Joseph Allen, wife Allison and daughter Adalynn; Deborah Pick Conway and husband John; Kyle Williams and daughter Gracyn. Kathleen is survived by one sister, Joyce Pate of Maryland. As her family was large, Kathleen was also blessed with many nieces and nephews. Flower gardening was a joy and Kathleen particularly liked sharing starts of her plants and teaching others how to care for them. She was active in the Lilac Road Garden Club, where she studied and developed a talent for arranging flowers. That ability gave her great pleasure and she liked incorporating flowers from her yard in the beautiful arrangements that were placed in Avondale Church. Kathleen was an excellent seamstress, a strong person, a good cook and famous for her shared boxes of cookies, apple pie and biscuits! She and Charles were able to travel after retirement and visited many areas around the world. They particularly liked ocean voyages, completing three around the world cruises; including two on the QE II. Mother had her camera and would return with pictures that became travel programs for family and friends. Kathleen was helped by many loving caregivers in her home and our gratitude is beyond measure. Most recently, Pearline Harrell, Jackie Gray, Brenda Richardson, Teresa Faucette, Berdine Grace and Daisy Wilson. She is loved and missed. We thank her for her love, her life lessons and the joy with which she shared both. She was a treasured Wife, Mother and Friend. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Avondale Presbyterian Church, 2821 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209.
