Obituary of Rose Dowd Doggett

Rose Dowd Doggett Rose Doggett, 102, of Charlotte, NC, passed on Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Stewart Health Center. Rose was born on August 19, 1910 in Carthage, NC, the youngest of eight children. Her father, Henry Clay Dowd, was a Civil War Veteran; her mother, Annie Smith Dowd, was a Christian woman who instilled a strong work ethic in Rose; early life lessons guided Rose throughout her life. Rose, an independent spirit, attended secretarial school in Charlotte, graduating with honors. Her late husband, George W Doggett, Sr., who died on February 24, 1969, preceded Rose in death. Rose met her husband on a blind date and would later say, "I had no idea what happened!" They married in 1937 and resided on Wood Dale Terrace in Charlotte. George, Jr., was born "an answer to a prayer" on Easter Sunday. Daughter Barbara followed two years later. Life centered around family reunions, trips to Florida and fabulous Southern cooking. Rose lead an active life following her retirement. She traveled extensively with retirees and seniors from the First Baptist Church of Charlotte and was an active member of the church. She was an avid Bridge player and enjoyed water aerobics at the Dowd YMCA. Her life was dedicated to her children and grandchildren. Our Rose was a faithful, special lady who brought light and fun to all she met and we are grateful for her life. We are also thankful for the staff of the Stewart Health Center for their compassionate care of Rose. Rose is survived by her son, George W Doggett, Jr. and wife, Michelle of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Barbara Doggett Hawkins and husband, Wayne of Houston, TX; grandsons, Scott Patterson and wife, Roxana, Jeff Doggett and wife, Katherin, Christopher Hawkins; granddaughter, Kim Sealy: great-grandchildren, Abigail Rose and Philip Patterson, Gavin Hawk and Jared Sealy; and a number of nephews, nieces and friends. A committal service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 28, 2012 at Sharon Memorial Park. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Rose Doggett will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday in the Chapel of Hankins & Whittington, 1111 East Blvd, Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening and following the memorial service at the funeral home.
