Obituary of Vara Virginia Taylor Callahan

Vara Virginia Taylor Callahan "V.V" Mrs. Vara Virginia Callahan, 96, passed away on February 28, 2013 at Legacy Heights Assisted Living in Charlotte. She was born on October 27, 1916, in Charlotte, NC daughter of the late Sampson Jeter Taylor and Vara Adelaide Duval Taylor. Mrs. Callahan was raised in the Dilworth community of Charlotte when it was outside the city limits of Charlotte, and where the trolley line ended. She graduated from Central High School in 1934 and Queens College in 1938. In 1940, she started her career with J.A. Jones Construction Company and eventually became the manager of The Doctor's Building on Kings Drive, a position she held for 22 years. Virginia was an active member of the Charlotte Business and Professional Women's Club for many years and was a past President. Virginia and her husband, Fred moved to Surfside Beach, S.C. where she worked part time for an accounting firm, but spent the majority of her time deep sea fishing, crabbing and digging for clams. Her freezer was always filled with a variety of seafood. Due to Fred's failing health they returned to Charlotte in 1985. Virginia was a long time member of McKee Road Baptist Church, and was their oldest living member at the time of her passing. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred F. Callahan, Jr. and her brother, Dr. Andrew D. Taylor. Mrs. Callahan is survived by her son, George Callahan; daughter, Patricia Kracke; grandchildren, Denise Merritt, Taylor Kracke, Evan Elisabeth Kracke and Sarah E. Mullis; 3 great-grandchildren, Meagan Merritt , Noah Merritt, and Jakob Taylor Kracke; nieces, Tonda Taylor and Terry Taylor; and nephew Andrew D. Taylor, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 7, 2013, in the chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203 with the Reverend Timothy Brown of McKee Rd. Baptist Church, officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to McKee Rd. Baptist Church, 4300 McKee Rd.
