Obituary of John Wilfred Mitchell

John Wilfred Mitchell Mr. Mitchell, 92, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC. John was born in Good Hope, SC on March 16, 1920 to the late Joe Waits Mitchell and Lillie Mae Smith. After his mother's death in 1929, John later moved to Charlotte and was raised by his uncle, Mosley Smith, and his wife, Sophie, and aunt, Emily Smith. He graduated from Harding High School in 1938 and was active in the Alumni Club for many years. John served his country as a pilot in WWII. His plane was shot down over Germany in 1944 and he was a POW for 18 months. He was also a Mason and Shriner for over 60 years. John is survived by his wife, Mildred Mitchell, of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Vicki Hamilton, of High Point, NC; step-son, David Blankenship, of Charlotte; step-daughter, Ann Green and her husband, Bob, of California; grandson, Wes Hamilton; three great grandchildren, Noah, Oliver and Kaia Hamilton and their mother, Alison Denio, all of Minnesota. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Anne Miller Mitchell, in 2000; son in-law, John Hamilton in 2010. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in John's name be made to the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Ave, Charlotte, NC 28203.
