Obituary of Thomas John Courtney

Thomas John Courtney of Charlotte, N.C. passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Charlotte CMC due to a series of illnesses. Tom was a wonderful father, mentor, and friend and will be truly missed but never forgotten. Tom was born on September 12. 1936 in Albany, N.Y. to the late Marie Bauer Courtney and Thomas Otto Courtney. He served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War and was educated at C.C.N.Y and the University of Miami. Tom’s early career was in the auto industry operating Gastonia Chrysler and Thrifty Rent a Car. For the past Forty years Tom’s passion and career has been in fine arts. He was survived by his wife of 57 years, Dawn Marr Courtney, one daughter, Margaret Courtney Selle of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. sons Gerald Courtney, of Langhorne, Pa., Mark Elliott Courtney of Charlotte, N.C., and Thomas Courtney of Bean Station, Tn. He has four grandchildren, Courtney Slattery Selle, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Sienna Courtney, Austin Courtney, Ethan Courtney, all of Langhorne, PA. his sister Barbara Courtney Denkhaus, of Melbourne, Fla. He was preceded in death by a sister Erna Courtney Brownstein. A memorial service will take place 11 am Tuesday, September 19, 2023 in the Chapel at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28203. A reception will follow at the funeral home. Officiating will be the Reverend Dr. David Helms. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the United Cerebral Palsy foundation.
