Martha Winn

Obituary of Martha Thies Winn

Martha Thies Winn, loving wife and mother, age 93, of Atlanta, GA passed away on September 3, 2023, in Charlotte, NC. Martha, known as Muv by her loved ones, was born in Charlotte, daughter of Karl and Eloise Thies, where she lived for thirty-six years before moving to Atlanta. She attended Central High School in Charlotte where she met her lifelong love and future husband John Winn. They were truly devoted to each other for sixty years of marriage. She attended Salem College and was active in the Alumnae Association. Her love and devotion were to her faith, family, and friends. She grew up in Myers Park, surrounded by neighbors and her extended family of parents, brothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Family ties remained a source of comfort her entire life. She was a true historian of Charlotte and its old neighborhoods, never forgetting a single detail about places and families. She carried that sense of place with her as she started her new life in Atlanta. Outgoing and generous by nature, she easily made many friends, and Atlanta became her true home. Her lifelong passion was interior design which she expressed through building or designing seven family homes in Atlanta. She was a dedicated member of North Avenue Presbyterian Church and joyfully served Christ.  She was as an Elder, moderator for Presbyterian Women, supported global and community outreach, mentored international students, and served on various committees including the hospitality and worship committees where she used her talents to help create a beautiful environment to worship and serve.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband John Thomas Winn, III in 2010. She is survived by her three sons: John Jeffrey (Samantha), William Frederick (Marianne), and Thomas Edward; six grandchildren: Caroline (Chris), Charlotte Anne (Ben), Anna, John, Jack, and Duncan; two great-grandchildren: Sydney and Elizabeth.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 16 at 1:00 p.m. at North Avenue Presbyterian Church, 607 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30308. Following the service, the family will greet friends at a church reception.
