Stephen Casey

Obituary of Stephen Patrick Casey

Stephen Patrick Casey 06/19/1950 – 09/29/2022 Steve returned to his Heavenly Family on Thursday September 29, 2022. He was the third child by Robert F. Casey and Mildred L. Casey. He was born at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, CO June 19, 1950, and grew up in Columbia, SC where he graduated from Dreher High School in 1968. Steve attended 2 years at the University of South Carolina in music. During this time, he met his love, Barbara Jane, also in the music department. Barb graduated in Theory and flute in January 1971. Steve auditioned for the Air Force Band and after being married December 20, 1971, off they went with the Air Force life. What fun that was! Mississippi, Alaska, Arizona, New Hampshire, Nebraska, RAF Alconbury, England (their most loved assignment), and finally to the DC area. It was a wonderful adventure! Over the years, 4 children appeared on the scene. B. Lynn in Alaska, Carl and Robert in Arizona, and John in New Hampshire. They were keepers! During their time in Arizona, they found the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which enriched their lives from then on. Over the years, Steve was a teacher, Scout leader, choir director, a missionary, and a Bishop in England. In DC, Steve was able to finish college and graduate from the University of Maryland in College Park with a Bachelor of Science degree in the summer of 1991, right before Air Force retirement. Steve loved his family and tried to help them pursue their interests (Lynn and her art, Carl who became a police officer, Robert who followed a long line of Military Army family and John, who after the Army concentrated on family). He loved his mother-in-law and was willing to uproot and move back to Charlotte to give support after her husband died. The last 5-6 years took his mobility and some of his spirit, but he and Barb had each other the whole time. Our lives have a big void, but just think about his life now. His void was leaving all of his sickness behind. I hope that the people that knew Steve will think of him, his humor, his talent, his knowledge, and his love for those around him. Family and friends will gather from 10 am to 11 am on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 111 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28203 with services following in our chapel at 11am.
