Obituary of Dr. Kenneth F. England

Dr. Kenneth (Ken) F. England, 92, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday April 11, 2021. Born August 10, 1928 in Morganton, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Joseph Cornelius England, Sr. and Roberta Wells England. 

 

Ken graduated from Morganton High School and then attended Appalachian State Teachers College where he played football and obtained an undergraduate and master’s degree, in education.  Ken continued his pursuit in higher learning with his Doctorate in Education degree at New York University. Proudly serving his country in the Korean War, Ken served in the Navy as a lieutenant in the intelligence division. Ken’s heart was in the education of children, making sure every child received the best education possible. With over 40 years served in the North Carolina Education system as teacher at Morganton High, principal at Barringer Elementary, Spaugh Jr. High, Quail Hollow Jr. High, Harding High, superintendent in Watauga County, Catawba County, Vance County and Beaufort County.  Ken also served at several North Carolina Universities as Chairman of the Education Department. Ken was a member of State and National Educational Administration Organizations, Rotary Club and Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity.

 

Ken enjoyed officiating football and basketball over the years, working in the yard and spending time with his family. He served in many roles over the years at First Baptist Church Charlotte, Providence Baptist Charlotte, Sisk Memorial Baptist in Fort Mill, Harrison United Methodist Pineville and Calvary Church Charlotte. He enjoyed going to Carolina Panthers games with his wife Jeanne, watching sports with his family and making those special stops at McDonalds for a milkshake or hot chocolate.

 

Ken is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jeanne Bigham England; son, Michael Joseph England and his wife Jill; daughter, Candace England Surratt and her husband Michael; as well as the special loves of his life his grandchildren; Kara England Hinkle and her husband David, Meredith England Madden and her husband Michael and Benjamin England; great grandchildren; Ryan Hinkle, Drew Hinkle and Savannah Madden.

 

In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his brothers, Norman England, Joseph Cornelius (J.C.) England, Jr, Bill England, and James Glenn England.

 

The family will receive friends Friday April 16, 2021 from 10-10:45 am at Calvary Church, 5801 Pineville-Matthews Rd, Charlotte, NC with a celebration of his life to follow with pastors Michael Cummings and Jim Cashwell officiating.  

 

A private interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte.
