Thank you for making the service today available online. The line about "filling the void with memories of joy" stood out and yet a tall order while grief abounds. I enjoyed the laughter at John's "I'm going to have to watch this girl" for not knowing what creative venture she might set before you without a word or warning. Three memories that will stay with me are 1) enjoying her art and her joy when her painting "Welcome Home" was selected by Lance Esplund for Carolinas Got Art in 2013, 2) the wonderfully overpowering fragrance of her homegrown roses brought generously for a housewarming, 3) encountering her creative touch at every turn when visiting her historic home for the first time and experiencing her simultaneously elegant and relaxed hospitality, a meal with luxurious details served barefoot on the screened in porch. Beyond beauty, creativity, and humble faith, she was also a wise woman. So much presence. I would have liked to learn more from her and share more with her and John for many years more. I'm so sorry for all our loss. Sending John and her family love and hope for gentle strength.

Lighting a candle in honor of Leigh is a very small gesture compared to the humble magnitude of her soul’s presence. To be with Leigh was a spiritual experience , as she always brought her soul’s essence into our interactions. She was my childhood friend and my most beloved friend as we grew up, reconnected, and immediately both remembered the innocent love we had for each other in our youth. Leigh was full of wisdom, light, and truth, always tuned into the moment. She blessed my life with her artistic viewpoints and her lovely art itself. I am so saddened that she lost this battle, as she fought it with all her strength, hand in hand with God and Jesus. .... I admired and respected deeply her desire to live a longer life..... and she is greatly missed.... my deepest compassion goes out to John and all the family. I will always carry the sweetest memories of her in my heart.
Much Love, Amy Asbury

Sweet Leigh, I’m so blessed to have known you. Quirky NoDa festivities back in the day, art talks over tea or coffee, visiting Mr. Charles the Mayor, nature walks and more. Your kindness and open heart (John’s as well) always made me feel at home. You were a being of light and love; I know you are surrounded by light and love now and it warms my heart.

Dear beautiful Leigh you had a way of making a lovely afternoon slow down, of distilling a pause in the conversation to a moment of deep connectiveness. I think after 10 minutes of meeting you we realized we had Williamsburg in Brooklyn, macrobiotics, and the Art Students League in NYC in common. Your fabulous sense of style, your kindness, your natural ability to see beauty everywhere, the bathtub in your lovely studio, and Arshelle's underground estate, are indelible imprints that will live in my heart forever. When I think of you and your roses, I think of the Little Prince who cherished his rose because it was the rose he loved. You and my dear departed sister were born on the same day in the same year and were both wonderful artists, bright creative minds, and gentle fierce flames. Our too short lived tradition of meeting up to celebrate your mutual birthday will be deeply missed, but I will celebrate you both always. I so deeply wish I could have one more visit in your garden to see your smile and share a pot of kukicha tea. I will miss you miss you dear friend.

Leigh is my Godmother. She was a big part of my childhood and has been a continual presence in my adult life as a great listener and guide to living artfully. The morning Leigh passed, I got a surprise in my yard. I think Leigh's spirit was passing over me on her way to be with God and made these bloom. I had no idea they were there.

Sweet Leigh. Sweet Leigh I thought it was your real name. Everyone calls you that.We have giggled over nonsense and we have had heartfelt faithful talks. We were friends in art and heart. You supported me with purchases of my art and allowed me to love Arshille....whose face is still on the old Solstice back wall. We loved Mayor Charles together but you walked the extra mile with him, as you did for so many in need of care. I will miss sharing art and glorying in our nature walks. Thanks dear Lord for giving us Leigh she will be remembered with joy...and a giggle. Sweet Leigh.

A bright light has gone out in this world but burns even brighter on the other side of the vale. She was a sweetheart and kind at every turn. If it is true that "The highest form of wisdom is kindness" Leigh was a sage. A life well-lived indeed!

Leigh was my very first friend and I think we met when we were 5 years old. Especially in those early summers, I "lived" at her house and we loved the woods and creek behind her house. We also loved the honeysuckle hedge that ran on the side of her large front yard. We did crafts together and that is when I knew she was an artist... I was somewhat competent, but she was a true artist even at a young age. We also played a lot of ping-pong for hours on end in the play hut across from the kitchen door. That ping-pong skill stayed with me and came back to me while I was serving in Iraq. I was able to win a tournament while stationed there and it was a rare fun moment in a distant non-fun place. Leigh always enjoyed the deeper things in this life and could really "turn a phrase" in developing her descriptions and opinions. Sometimes we would talk about heaven and that we hoped we could have the dogs that we loved with us there, that God would grant us their company. I like to think that now. Love, Sally
