Anita Piemont

Obituary of Anita G. Piemont

Anita G. “Bernie” Piemont , age 96, of Charlotte, NC, passed peacefully from this world at her home on January, 20, 2020. Born in 1923, in Orange, NJ, her happy childhood was spent going through school, where her best subject was math, and where she met her future husband, Joe. Her passion was dancing and performing in dance recitals, and she excelled at tap dancing.

Soon after graduation from Orange High School, the United States entered WWII and she enlisted in the Coast Guard Women's Reserve, and served at the Pentagon, in Washington, DC until the war’s end. After the war, she married Joe, the love of her life, and became a loving and devoted mother and homemaker. Always very creative and accomplished at crafts and sewing, she constantly acquired new skills which she used to make the family homes both lovely and comfortable. In addition to creating decor items for the home, she made clothing for the family as her sewing skills advanced.

Always active, she seemed to be in constant motion. She enjoyed golf and became a proficient player, winning many local tournaments. She loved the ocean, and in summer, she often spent time at her favorite place, Sea Pines, in Hilton Head, SC. A dedicated Charlotte Hornets fan, Bernie attended as many games as she could over the years.

She became  a remarkable cook, and enjoyed entertaining family and friends over the years. As she got older, she spent much time knitting and crocheting and provided many of her items to local hospitals and charities. And, in her quiet times, she enjoyed reading historical and contemporary romance novels.

Generous and supportive to friends and family alike, Bernie had many loyal friends throughout her lifetime. Her sense of humor was well-known and contagious, and she wasn’t afraid to laugh at herself when necessary!  But, her most enduring  qualities were her absolute and steadfast loyalty and devotion to her family, and her unconditional love and fierce determination in raising her children and supporting her husband. Wonderful wife, mother, friend, hard working, funny, and fun to be with, she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Bernie was predeceased by her loving husband of 72 years, Joe. She was also predeceased by her parents and her brothers, George, and John, and her sisters, Katherine, Barbara, and Joan. She is survived by her daughter Anita Gersch, and her sons, Joseph, Jeffrey, and Steven Piemont, by 5 grandchildren, and by one great-grandchild.

The family wishes to thank those who extended extra care and emotional support for Bernie during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Charlotte in her name. A memorial gathering celebrating her long life will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 2pm at The Cypress of Charlotte..
