James L. Carter “Jippy” passed away Thursday, December 13, 2018.  He was born in Charlotte, NC May 24, 1931 to J. Louis Carter and Pernette A. Carter.

Jippy graduated from old Central High School, Charlotte, NC in 1949.  He was a star basketball player and was state High Scorer.  After graduation, he went on scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill where he played basketball under former coach Frank McGuire.  After graduating with a degree in journalism in 1954, he served in the Army for 2 years in Stutgard, Germany.  Upon returning Charlotte, he met and married his wife of 61years, Edith in 1957.

Edith and Jippy returned to Chapel Hill to live where he graduated from Law School in 1960. They returned to Charlotte  where he joined his father’s law practice until 1970 when his father passed away.

Jippy continued his law practice for the next 42 years.  Jippy attended Sardis Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Dowd YMCA.  In 2008 he was the recipient of the “Spirit Mind and Body Award”.

Jippy loved traveling (in healthier years) especially in Europe  where he and Edith went many time.  He also loved going to Ocean Isle Beach where they had a condo and lots of friends.

He loved all sports; especially basketball and tennis.  He grew to love baseball after his grandson Alex was drafted into the major leagues as a pitcher.

He was so proud of all 4 grandchildren and his daughters and their accomplishments.

Jippy loved music, travel and meeting new people.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother John.

He is survived by his wife Edith of 61 years; grandchildren, Megan Dawkins of Wilmington, NC, Jamie Dawkins (Liz) of Charlotte, NC, Alex Wood (Suzanna) of Atlanta, GA, Stephanie Wood of NY; daughters Cathy Fitzgerald (Peter) of Charlotte, NC, Carol Wood (Richard) of Charlotte, NC; and great grandchildren Carter Dawkins and Cate Dawkins.
