I was truly saddened on Sunday morning to read in the Charlotte paper Sunday morning about Mr. Singer. Although I only remember speaking to Mr. Singer on two occasions, a lesson he taught me many years ago still sticks with me to this day and hopefully a lesson that I have been able to pass on to my own 4 children and grandchildren.
Back in 1973, I was a lean and lanky 12 year old who lived down the street on Saint John's Lane. I had gotten a new football for Christmas that year and on a cold January day, I had gathered with all my buddies to play football. The field of choice that day was the Singer's next door neighbor on the right side. It was one of the largest front yards on the street and as long as the husband was at work, we were able to play ball in that yard.
We had only been playing a short time, but our team had scored and it was my turn to kick off to the opposing group of boys at the other end of the yard.I took a fast charging approach to meet the ball as my foot made contact. Although I kicked it very long I also pushed the kick far right. We all watched that ball sail and I hard my friend Tom say, "this is not good". I saw where the ball was going and turned my head away just as I heard the crash.....straight through Jim Singer's window on the end of the house. As all my buddies turned chicken on me and ran away, I ran to the Singer house at the window to get my football. No ball!... It was inside the house. I was scared to death but I knew I couldn't go home without that ball. I knew what I had to do and hoped Mr. Singer didn't throttle me when I went to the door. Just as I reached the bottom step on the porch, he opened the door with my football in his hand. He wanted to know how my football made it into his bedroom. I told him the truth and said that I was so sorry. I also told him that I didn't have the money to fix the window so soon after Christmas, but I promised that I would cut his grass for the whole summer that year to make up for it. His response is what has stuck with me all of these years. He looked down at me while removing his glasses and said, "what is your name son and where do you live". After I gave him my name he put his hand on my shoulder and replied, "you handled your mistake the way you were suppose to, you didn't run like all your buddies." "You will make many more mistakes in your life young man, and when you do, always face them head on, that is the only way to learn from them". He handed me my football and said, "you don't worry about that window son, I will have it fixed." As I turned to walk away he said "Eddie, tell all those other boys the next time you all play football over in that yard, kick off from the other end!"
Thanks to my younger brother, my parents already knew about the accident by the time I got home. In fact my mother said that Lou Singer was a good friend and in her bridge club. She said the Singers were nice people and I said yes they are.
Twenty- seven years went by before I ran into Mr Singer again. It was at a neighborhood Christmas Eve party help at the George's house across the street from the Singers. I asked him if he remember the incident from so many years ago and he just smiled......I moved out of that neighborhood when I was 15 years old so it was happenstance that I would run into him again , but I am glad I did. Isn't it amazing the impact people can have on one another, even over a football game and a shattered window? In just seconds after seeing his obituary, this is the memory I had of him.
Rest in peace Mr. Singer...............Eddie Link, Mooresville, N.C.
