Obituary of Lore Vohs Schiftan

Lore Vohs Schiftan, 100, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2017. Lore was born on June 28, 1917, in Wilhelmshaven, Germany to the late Henni and Josef Vohs. With the rise of Adolph Hitler, Lore became concerned that she would not be allowed to complete her fashion design studies and employment in an upscale women's clothing store. She asked an uncle in the United States to provide her with an affidavit to immigrate to the United States. Upon her arrival in the New York City she easily found employment in the Garment District. In 1945, she married the love of her life, Herbert Schiftan, another German refugee, and they settled in Asheville, NC, where they raised their family and became involved in the community. Upon Herbert's death in 1993, Lore moved to Charlotte to be close to her family and participated in many activities at the Carriage Club. She is survived by her daughter Peggy (Elliot) of Charlotte, son Michael (Marlene) of Winston-Salem, NC, grandchildren Geoffrey (Meredith) Gartner, Mitchell Gartner both of Charlotte, Rachel Schiftan of Washington, DC, and her great-granddaughters, Samantha and Lindsey Gartner. Memorial services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Temple Israel in Charlotte, NC and at Temple Emanuel in Greensboro at 12:30 pm on Sunday, January 7, 2018 .
