Dear Jackie,
I had received an email last week from Bill Goldenberg telling me that Stephen was very ill, but when I called Bill on Saturday, he told me that Stephen had passed away. I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear this terrible news. Stephen was one of my very favorite people. Of course, we met through business, but we developed a true friendship, as I think you know. I had a tremendous respect for Stephen. He was a man of principal and you could always trust his word, something that, as I have learned, is not always the case these days. He had such a wonderful spirit and a terrific sense of humor. Doris and I still talk about how Stephen would regale me with his stories about what a great treat "shrimp and grits" was until he finally sent me a package of grits and a recipe, and you know what, he was right. I can't watch the court scene in "My Cousin Vinny" about how long it takes "the entire grit eating world" to boil grits, without thinking of Stephen. I had been reminding myself to call Stephen over the last few months, just to say "hi" and see how things were going. It had been a long time since we had caught up. I so regret that I didn't. I am hoping that somewhere, he knows that this old friend is thinking about him. My condolences to you and to your family.
With my best wishes,
Richard Rosen

I have to second Scott Ingles in the manner of Mr. Pace being that second father figure in my life. He was a man of compassion and laughter and happiness. I loved every minute of him being my scout leader for troop 118. I have many many many fond memories of Mr. Pace. If not for him, I would have never gotten to Eagle Scout. I wish the entire Pace family my condolences and many happy memories of a man who lived life the right way. I will miss him!! He was......trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and revenant! Im not too sure on the obedient....haha. He was a major influence on me changing my life into my 20s. I could talk to him and he would listen. Thank you Mr. Pace.

Aside from my own father, I don't think any man was a bigger influence on my life than Mr. Pace. I never would have made it up that first hill when I joined the Scouts at 4'8", 60lbs, and I never would have made Eagle seven years later, without his encouragement and support. I have no doubt that Troop 118 will continue as strong as ever, guided by his memory.

My heartfelt condolences to the Pace family. Stephen had a tremendous impact on my life through Scouting and helped to guide me through challenging teenage years. Living a life of education and service today is a direct result of the lessons I learned while a part of Troop 118. I will forever be indebted.

I came to Troop 118 with my son who is an Eagle and stayed 33 years. Hiking, canoeing, working with the boys and adults was a wonderful experience. The glue that held it together was Stephen Pace. He was a Hall of Fame Scoutmaster, family man, successful businessman and a friend for life. He left a great legacy with Troop 118 and all who were here during his 49 years as a leader. He will be missed. Everyone keep praying for his family. One Pace At A Time.

I am sad to hear of Stephen' passing. Stephen was my first cousin and nine years older. Many days were spent playing and having meals with my cousins, Melody and Myron, at their home in Saluda. As an older "cool" cousin, Stephen was sweet, kind and always had a smile on his face. I remember when Stephen and Jackie were dating and thought they were the "coolest couple"...as I did with Stephen's brother, Allen. Although one does not always get to know older cousins well, they have significant impact on the younger ones, and as an adult I remember Stephen as dear. I loved growing up with his family, Aunt Donnie, Uncle Paul, Melody, Myron...very special memories I treasure with all my heart. I have not seen you, beautiful Jackie, in years and have never met Bryan or Kathy, but having read Stepen's obituary can see that he had a beautiful life and family...a really beautiful life...touching his family and others in a special way.
I send so much love, blessings and Grace to the entire family.....
Bravo, hooray and well done, Stephen...a life well live!!!

A memory about Stephen that stands out for me was the day he came into the model home I was working in and told me about the fundraising he was doing in order to get a service dog for Alex. He was so excited. I can still see the love in his face while he was telling me. I know that Alex and the entire Pace family now has the best guardian angel watching over them.
I am so sorry for your loss,

Saddened to hear of your loss. I sent a letter in November I hope Mr. Pace was able to read it. Truly a great man and scoutmaster. We all learned an enormous amount under his tutelage. I carried my Scout lessons into a lifelong military career that still continues today. His family and his extended family of scouts will be his lasting legacy.

Jackie, Brian, Kathy and your families,
There are no words to capture how sad this loss is. Stephen….so larger than life. As I said to Brian…I will always picture him on the stairs of your Lake Norman home welcoming us to the Christmas Eve brunch. Stephen at his confident, warm, loving best.
Jackie…what a love story. As I read the obituary today, I couldn't help but smile at the thought of the two of you finding your connection in high school… What a sweet thought to think of those moments! You two were a dynamic duo times a thousand. I truly cannot imagine how you are feeling with the loss of him; I am profoundly sad for you. Yet…I DO know how strong you are…and that your faith will bring you through these darkest days and nights.
Kathy…I'm sure you are feeling such a void without the man who loved your son not just as a grandson…but as "his hero." His endless love, hope and support must have felt like a great big, warm blanket when you needed it most. I can't imagine how it feels to miss him on these deep levels. I am so sorry. But I do know a man who also considers your sweet son a hero…;). Speaking of whom…
Brian…You know how I feel…you and your Dad were an incredible father-son force. There was just nothing like standing back and watching that chemistry…;) That apple did not fall far from the tree…greatness bred greatness.
Our whole family continues to hold you all in our hearts, our thoughts, and our prayers. Jackie, this morning I told Thomas about you two being high school sweethearts and Stephen being a Vietnam vet and leading 190 young men to Eagle. He just listened and paused… and then said: "Wow….what an awesome guy."
Yeah. He sure was.
With Love,
The Brenner Family

It was such a privilege to have worked for and alongside Stephen Pace. My only regret is having known him for such a short time. In that short time I easily recognized that Stephen was one great example of a fine human being who had a caring and loving heart for his community. Everyone who walks in the door has a wonderful Stephen story. Our job is to make sure his story doesn't end here. I will carry him in my heart always and do my best to honor his memory.

I have been involved with Troop 118 for 33 years now. We have hiked and canoed many miles together in those years, and climbed and repelled at several locations in NC.
Our trip to Philmont Scout Reservation in NM required the most training and presented the greatest challenges. That trip normally has 5 days hiking, one day of rest, and another 5 days hiking. Stephen felt we prepared well enough to skip the resting day, so we hiked 11 straight days, covering 110 miles as I recall. We both liked to fish so we carried fly rods with us and managed to hit streams or beaver ponds to fish some of the time. We would let the boys rest while we fished for an hour or so each of those days and we still beat our sister patrol to the designated camp site.
I think this was one of the best trips we did together, but there are 30 plus trips we did that were great high adventure experiences as well. He kept journals and encouraged boys to do the same. I hope many of our Scouts retained their journals as well as the memories that we shared.
Respectfully,
Rick Heckle

I have so many wonderful memories of Steve while being an adult Scout leader in Troop 118 and a member of the Umbrella Patrol. My son, Trey, received his Eagle Award under Steve's leadership. One of many cherished memories are the Sunday morning church services Steve always gave on our camping trips. I was inspired by his words presented along with the beautiful views of Mother Nature that always surrounded us. The look on the faces of the scouts and fellow adults will always be in my mind. He was a Master of Scouting and Life!!
