Obituary of Charles Spratt

Charles Augustus Spratt, Jr. Charlie Spratt, 66, died Friday, April 10, 2009, in his Charlotte home, with his family by his side. A Charlotte native, he was the son of Charles Augustus Spratt, Sr. and Choice Chase Spratt, also of Charlotte. Charlie was active in the world of competitive soaring, a passion that led him across the country and around the world. He became a mainstay on the circuit through a love of aviation, serving as Competition Director of many national soaring championships over the past 30 years. In his later years, he served as a member of the Soaring Society of America?s (SSA) Board of Directors for more than 10 years, and was elected to the Soaring Hall of Fame in 1993. He was an author, writing columns for various soaring publications; he published his memoires, See Ya at the Airport, in 2004. In the 1990?s, he worked at Charlotte Latin School, where he taught aerodynamics and modeling. Charlie is survived by his sister, Townley Spratt Moon of Charlotte; brother, Julian R. Spratt of Charlotte, and wife, Karen; niece, Chase Moon Chichester of Annandale, Virginia and husband John; nephew, Travis Waterbury Moon, Jr., of Washington, D.C.; and two great-nieces, Liza and Molly Chichester. A memorial service will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. The family will receive guests at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Soaring Society of America, P.O. Box 2100, Hobbs, New Mexico 88241-2100.
