Obituary of Robert Lipps

Robert Paul Lipps Robert Paul Lipps, long time resident of Alexandria, VA, passed away of natural causes at the age of 91, on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 in Charlotte, NC where he had been a resident since 2006. Born in Alexandria, Virginia on November 25, 1920, Paul was the son of, Robert Lynn Lipps and Nettie Young of Rosemont Avenue. Paul a communicant of St Paul?s Church for more than 70 years, graduated from George Washington High School, and studied at UVA before entering the Army's Aviation Cadet School in 1943. He became a Second Lt., decorated for bravery in the invasion of Normandy registering 555 flight hours as a B17 pilot before begin shot down over Germany and taken prisoner of war. An avid outdoorsman and athlete, Paul was a member and officer of Belle Haven Country Club, the 1939 golf club champion and life guard. He played on the high school baseball team, and for the Alexandria Legion Juniors. His career in management began in Alexandria, with Royal Crown Cola and 7-Up. He spent 28 years with Hackney Truck Body Company before retiring in 1985. Married for 47 years Paul was preceded in death by his wife Alice Johnson Lipps, his parents and his brother. He is survived by his three children, Katherine Spets, Bryan Lipps and Dorothy Nelson; two sons-in laws, David Spets, and Eric Nelson, and daughter-in-law Peggy Lipps; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 10:30 AM in the Hankins and Whittington Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC. A burial service at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Alexandria, VA will be announced at a later date.
