Obituary of Lloyd Swicegood

Lloyd V. Swicegood, 83, husband of Mary Jane Swicegood of Charlotte, died Thursday, November 01, 2012 at Mecklenburg Healthcare Center where he had been a resident since suffering a severe stroke in 2005. The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff for their kindness and care over the years. Mr. Swicegood was born February 19, 1929 in Spencer, NC and was the son of the late George Webster Swicegood and Alma Lloyd Swicegood. He grew up taking lunch over to his father who repaired railroad cars at the Spencer Shops. Throughout his life, he enjoyed returning to Spencer to see friends and loved showing his children his old house, school and paper route. Mr. Swicegood graduated from Catawba College and retired from the NC Dept. of Veteran?s Affairs. He played tennis and enjoyed basketball. He was a church deacon, church teller and a greeter. Nothing made him happier than driving to a fish camp to eat dinner. He always dreamed of taking a cruise and did that with his son and daughter. He is survived by his wife of 52 years; one son, Steven Lloyd Swicegood and his wife, Angela of Charlotte, and their sons Grant and Mitchell; one daughter, Paige Swicegood Strickland and her husband Rick of Mooresville, NC; sister-in-law Myrle Swicegood of New Bern, NC; brother-in-law James Withers of Charlotte; sister-in-law Sara F Hutchins and her husband Ken of Jamestown, NC; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother George W. Swicegood, Jr. and his sister, Doris Swicegood Beaver and her husband Ed, all of whom he loved and looked up to. A memorial service for Mr. Swicegood will be held 5:00 PM Monday, November 5, 2012, at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service with the Reverend Jim Cashwell of Calvary Church officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Spencer Shops/NC Transportation Museum, 411 S. Salisbury Ave., Spencer, NC 28159 or to the Children?s Home Society of NC PO Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415
