Obituary of Alice Gray

Alice Quinn Gray Mrs. Gray, 97, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Asbury Care Center in Charlotte, NC. She was born April 26, 1915 in York County, SC, daughter of the late John Baxter Quinn and Mary Barry Quinn. The family moved to Charlotte when Alice and her siblings were young; she grew up in the Fourth Ward, attended Charlotte public schools, and graduated from Charlotte (Central) High School in 1933. Alice worked for several local businesses as a secretary, bookkeeper and office manager; she retired from Fleming Laboratories. She was a longtime member of Dilworth United Methodist Church and participated in many activities and committees there. Over the years Alice volunteered with the Lions Club Auxiliary, Salvation Army Auxiliary, and men?s homeless shelter; she served as a volunteer nurse?s aid at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Carolinas Medical Center) during World War II. Alice enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Walter Preston Gray, Jr.; a daughter, Katherine Barry Gray; her sisters, Sally Nicholson Crowe and Lucille Quinn Ramsey; and her brother James Baxter Quinn. Alice is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Preston (Beth) Gray, son-in-law, Russell H. Stepp, Jr.; sister-in-law Virginia Quinn, and several nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Dilworth United Methodist Church, 605 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203 with the Reverend Ben Devoid officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Alice?s family wishes to express appreciation for kind, compassionate care she received from the staff of Aldersgate /Asbury Care Center and Presbyterian Hospice & Palliative Care.
