Obituary of Evelyn Irene Dunlap Quinn

Evelyn Irene Dunlap Quinn After several years of declining health, Mrs. Quinn went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Cleveland Hospice House in Shelby, NC. Evelyn was born on October 22, 1926, in Hillgirt, NC, a daughter of the late Jefferson and Mattie Leeanna Newman Dunlap. Evelyn completed school at the Junior Order Home in Tiffin, Ohio and Lexington, NC and was proud to be a homekid. She graduated from Presbyterian Hospital Nursing School as a registered nurse. She received a certificate in Public Health Nursing at UNC at Chapel Hill and a certificate in geriatric nursing from Pfeifer College. Mrs. Quinn worked as a public Health Nurse for 31 years before her retirement. Evelyn volunteered as a teacher's aide in Lincoln County Schools, Tuckaseegee Elementary School in Mecklenburg County. For fourteen years she volunteered as a hospice nurse. Evelyn lived a full and wonderful life. Her sweet smile, caring disposition, kind spirit, positive attitude and love of the Lord made her friends too many. Evelyn was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt and took great delight in being a great grandmother. Evelyn was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Quinn was preceded in death by her husband of fifty seven years, Robert; son, David; brothers, Lloyd, Bill and Jack Dunlap. Also numerous cousins, homekids brothers and sisters, teachers and house parents predeceased her. Survivors include her daughter, Katherine Quinn Smith and husband Anthony of Cherryville, NC; grandsons, Robert Kelly Lewis and Terrance Smith and wife Cheryl, and 3 great grandchildren, Robert Kelly Riddick Lewis, Emma and Allie Smith and 3 step great grandchildren, Gage, Abby and Hannah Baxter and a number of special nieces and nephews. Evelyn enjoyed her stay at Aldersgate Retirement Center. She enjoyed the new friends, the staff at Aldersgate and the Back Porch Sharp Note Singers. A special thanks to all who touched her life; nieces, nephews, special caregiver Amanda Mattney and the staff at Cleveland Hospice House. She loved each and every one. Funeral service for Mrs. Quinn will be 2:00 PM Saturday, March 9, 2013, in the chapel at Hankins & Wittington with her cousin Rev. Johnny Mason officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
