Joseph Francis Poston, Jr. "Joe" Mr. Poston died Monday, March 25, 2013, at the age of 80 at Carriage Club Retirement Community in Charlotte, North Carolina. Joe was born on August 1, 1932, the son of the late Joseph Francis Poston, Sr. & Elizabeth Bundy Poston and grew up in the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte. He graduated from Central High School in the class of 1950, then attended Charlotte College while interning at Interstate Securities. It was there that he met Ethel Bernice Jerman, who would become the love of his life. In 1951, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on board the fleet oiler USS Manatee (AO-58) and in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief, US Pacific Fleet during and after the Korean War. Joe & Ethel were married at First United Methodist Church in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1953, where they were members and enjoyed singing in the church choir. The Postons moved back to Charlotte in 1955 and remained residents for the rest of their lives. Joe's career encompassed 35 years as a manager and analyst in the Textile Fibers division of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. In addition, for 45 years he taught swimming part-time to adults and children at the Dowd (formerly known as Central) Branch of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. He was an active member of Myers Park United Methodist Church beginning in 1955, serving on the Administrative Board and Board of Stewards. He enjoyed being a part of the church's Wesley Class and Adults Plus! group, and volunteering with the church's youth. He was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte partnered with Myers Park United Methodist Church on many housing projects. He was also a member and treasurer of the Charles M. Setzer #693 A.F & A.M. Lodge. In his spare time Joe enjoyed woodworking, swimming, and traveling. His favorite vacation places were the mountains of North Carolina in Lake Junaluska, Boone, & Blowing Rock, and the Litchfield and Pawleys Island beaches of South Carolina. Joe loved his family. He was a loving, devoted husband to Ethel for 59 years, a wonderfully dedicated father and grandfather. Joe was preceded in death in July 2012 by his beloved Ethel; he is survived by their two children: Joseph Thomas Poston and Judith Poston Crovi, both of Charlotte, North Carolina, son-in-law Michael Crovi, and grandchildren Joseph Michael and Philip Jonathan Crovi of Charlotte.
