Obituary of Nina Norris Blake

Mrs. Blake, 101, of Charlotte, NC died on May 3, 2013 at Aldersgate Retirement Community. She was born on January 29, 1912 in Chapells, Newberry County, SC, a daughter of the late Fred Reed and Carrie Lupo Norris. Her family moved to Charlotte in 1922 and she attended South School, Alexander Graham Junior High School and graduated from Central High School in 1928. After graduating from high school, Nina received a four year scholarship to Queens College to study education. She graduated from Queens in 1932. Her first teaching position was at Copeland School in Surry County where she taught for 12 years. In 1944, Nina returned to Charlotte and began teaching at Thomasboro School where she taught for 27 years. Her last year of teaching was at Merry Oaks, finishing a forty year teaching career in 1972. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Blake is preceded in death by her husband, Eddie F. Blake; sister, Kathleen Norris Stroupe; and a brother, Frank Norris. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 10, 2013 in the chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday for one hour prior to the service.
