Obituary of Anne O'Brien Tompkins

Anne O'Brien Tompkins Mrs. Tompkins, 78, of Charlotte, NC, died May 30, 2013 after a brief illness. Anne was born June 23, 1934 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania and grew up in Waynesboro, Virginia as one of nine children. She and her siblings enjoyed their close-knit life under the care of loving parents Dr. David and Mary Rose O'Brien. Anne was born as a twin to Constance and they were as close as twins can be, but she shared the same closeness with all of her siblings. Anne was bright, funny and loved to laugh and so she was magnetic to all who entered her presence. Simply put she was irresistible. Anne met Mikel Tompkins in Pennsylvania and they married in 1957. They lived in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Williamsport, Pennsylvania before settling in Charlotte in 1971. Anne was the consummate wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend. To know her in these ways was to possess a tiny Irish treasure. She enjoyed riding horses, watching golf, her Wednesday lunches with "the ladies", and finding gifts to give. She was a wonderful listener and always had a genuine care for how those around her were doing. Her favorite activities always focused on the care of others, never fussing about her own maladies or troubles. People loved her because she listened. Anne will be missed dearly by her friends at Our Lady of Assumption, and her special friend Anna Fitch whom she loved like a sister. In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her daughter in law, Rhonda Tompkins. Anne is survived by her husband Mikel; children Amy Albanese (Dennis) of San Juan Capistrano, California; Mikel Tompkins Jr. (Rhonda) of Fort Lawn, SC; Stephen Tompkins (Renée) of Key West, Fla.; Anne Tompkins (J'Nell Bryson) of Charlotte; Peter Tompkins (Janene) of Durham; five grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 4207 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday for one hour prior to the mass.
