Obituary of Edna Warren Green Henderson

Edna Warren Green Henderson, 99, died June 11, 203 at Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte, NC. She was born Edna Warren Green in Ohatchee, Alabama to the late Abraham Green and Allie Belle Collins Green on October 11, 1913. As a young girl she attended St. Katherine's School in Bolivar, Tennessee. She married Thomas Henry Henderson of Birmingham, Alabama in 1934 and had been married to him for 49 years at the time of his death in 1983. Edna was a member of the Episcopal Cathedral Church where she had been very active and was a tireless servant-leader. In addition, Mrs. Henderson volunteered with the American Red Cross for over 30 years. She also served as PTA president for a number of years and was actively involved in the schools that her children attended. Edna was a lovely human being who was generous and kind to everyone with whom she came into contact and continued being an outgoing person as long as she lived. When words became difficult for her, she often spoke the words "I love you" to her caregivers. Edna is survived by her daughter Ann W. Spence of Charlotte, NC and her son Tom Henderson of Bluffton, SC and their respective families including four grandchildren; Thomas Spence, Mark Spence, Ashley Henderson and Michelle Henderson, along with five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by the last of three sisters, Ruth McGillicuddy, and several nieces and nephews, and their families. A memorial service to celebrate Edna's life will be held at Southminster Retirement Community 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210 on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 12 NOON. Graveside services will take place in Birmingham, Alabama. Her family wishes to thank the staff of Southminster for the skillful and loving care that Edna has been given, especially Holly House. Also, her family is grateful for the support and care from Hospice during Edna's final days. In lieu of flowers her family respectfully requests memorials in Edna's memory be made to the Charlotte Chapter of the American Red Cross 2401 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28203 or Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh Stree, Charlotte, NC 28204, or to a charity of the donar's choice.
