Obituary of Marguerite Mapp Knee

Marguerite Wilkins Mapp Knee Mrs. Knee died on June 19, 2013, at Plantation Estates, Matthews, NC. She was born on December 4, 1923, at White Hall Farm in Machipongo on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Margaret Susan Wilkins Mapp and Claude Milton Mapp. Marguerite is survived by her husband, Dan Aaron Knee, to whom she was a devoted and loving wife of 67 years. Marguerite was loved dearly by family and friends. She always had time for friends and never had a harsh word about anyone. She enjoyed sitting on the beach, reading, gardening and playing with her grandchildren. Her family says she was the perfect example of unconditional love. Marguerite graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University). Following college she taught elementary school for 25 years in Norfolk, VA, Raleigh, NC, Greensboro, NC and Charlotte, NC. She always loved her students and taught with warmth and compassion. At Idlewild Elementary School in Charlotte she won Teacher of the Year numerous times. She was devoted to as well as loved, respected and admired by all of her students and coworkers. Marguerite and Dan have two daughters, Susan Knee Smith and husband Van Smith of Charlotte and Mallery Knee Pittman and husband Charlie Pittman of Charlotte. Fondly known as Maggie, her grandchildren are Claire Pittman Roberts and husband Taylor Roberts of Raleigh, NC, Reese Pittman and wife Kirsten Valle Pittman of Charlotte, NC and Claude Vandiver Smith and wife Saunders Campbell Smith of Annandale, VA. Great grandchildren are Tavener Shepherd Roberts, Emory Marguerite Roberts, Bangle Aaron Smith and Hatcher Landgrave Smith. A service to celebrate her life will be held at Plantation Estates, 733 Plantation Estates Drive, Charlotte, NC 28105, by Reverend Dr. Larry Watts, Chaplin of Plantation Estates at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Family will receive friends following the service. A family service will be held at Hungars Church on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Hungars Church is of historical significance as one of the earliest churches in this country founded in 1623. Marguerite's family have been participating members for over 11 generations.
