Obituary of Gail L. Breen

GAIL LINDSEY BREEN, May 4, 1940-Nov. 21, 2023. Gail Lindsey Breen, of Charlotte, died Nov. 21 at home surrounded in her last days by family after a years-long struggle with cancer. She was 83.

Born in Minneapolis, she graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College, where she majored in English and history.

She moved to New York, where she taught on Long Island, she worked in human resources for Bloomingdale’s. It was in New York that she met her future husband, Joseph Breen. They married in 1970 and had two sons.

After living in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, the family relocated to Charlotte in 1994. Gail worked for 12 years in the Executive Search Group at Wells Fargo.

Gail was also active in the community, including at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, where she was a devoted parishioner, served as a lector and volunteered with Loaves & Fishes and the Crisis Assistance Ministry.

She was also a member of the Halifax Convention Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and volunteered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Elections - Precinct 58, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control, where she adopted her faithful feline companion, Zoe.

An excellent cook, she also loved to travel and read. She was dedicated to her sons’ education and success, and worked hard to provide opportunities for her family.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph, two sons, David (Lynn) and Peter (Jenny), her brother Peter (Constance), and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the Via Hospice team, home health aides and numerous friends and volunteers who supported Gail and the family.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 507 S. Tryon St. in Uptown Charlotte. Reception to follow at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.
