Obituary of Rose Marie Holden Cole

Rose Marie Holden Cole, of Denver, NC, formally of Newland, the Linville Land Harbor Community, and Holden Beach, passed away peacefully Friday, June 23, 2023, at her home.

 

Born August 5, 1932, in Durham NC, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Rothschild H. Holden and Emma Davis Holden.

 

She was a 1953 graduate of The Woman’s College of The University of North Carolina presently University of North Carolina at Greensboro graduating with a B.A. in Recreation.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, James Leo Cole, and her brother, Rothschild Halstead Holden.

 

Through her life, Rose’s lovely and bright smile was the first thing everyone experienced. Always warm and outgoing, her laugh and loving expressions instantly made you, her friend. She lived her best life with friends, family, and community.

 

Rose enjoyed giving of her time and was involved with Newland United Methodist Church, college alumni associations, various board positions, many other volunteer organizations. She enjoyed playing golf, knitting, arts & crafts, traveling, fishing, and playing bridge. As a direct descendant of  Benjamin Holden and his wife Hannah Leonard of Brunswick County, living at Holden Beach was near and dear to her heart.

 

Family was most important to Rose, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren were very special to her. She is survived by her children, James Leo Cole, Jr. (Jim) and wife Caroline of Fort Mill, S.C.; Elizabeth Cole Costner (Libby) and her husband Tim of Little River, S.C.; Charles Holden Cole (Chuck) of Denver, N.C.; brother, John Quinton Holden and wife Betty of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Shelby Cole Ritter and husband Scott of Arlington, Tenn.; Jamie Cole Hurst and husband Brandon of Ashland, Mo.; Davis Martin Cole of Fort Mill, S.C.; great grandchildren, Carolyna Cole Ritter, Turner Louis Ritter, and Silas James Hurst, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations in Rose’s name can be made to Newland United Methodist Church, Newland N.C.; Holden Beach Chapel, Holden Beach N.C.; Cannon Memorial Hospital, Boone, N.C.; or your favorite charity.
