Obituary of Dr. Albert M. Lyles

Dr. Albert M. Lyles, 96, passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Sharon Towers in Charlotte, NC.

 

Born 28 July 1926 in Marion County, FL, he attended Marion County schools.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946.  Subsequently he graduated from Union College (NY), earned an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

 

A teacher and a scholar, he taught at the University of Missouri and the University of Tennessee.  Dr. Lyles was an administrator at Virginia Commonwealth University and Winthrop University.  In retirement he was an active volunteer with the Crisis Assistance Ministry for twenty years.  After Dr. Lyles was confirmed in the Orthodox Church in 1981, his worship at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral greatly enriched his life.  He was the primary author of Orthodox Iconography, which he saw as his principal scholarly achievement.

 

Dr. Lyles was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian and his son, Stephen.  He is survived by his son, Lawrence Lyles, grandson James Albert Lyles and granddaughter Shannon Elizabeth Lyles.

 

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 17th at Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte at 10:30 a.m.
