Obituary of Emily Allen

Emily Jeffress ?Jeff? Vaughan Cotter Allen Mrs. Allen, 90, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2011. She was born on January 13, 1921, in Durham, NC, to the late Joseph Leigh Vaughan and Emily Jeffress Borum Vaughan. Jeff graduated from Duke University in 1942 where she was co-ed business manager of the Duke & Duchess magazine. As a member of the Tri Delta sorority, she was instrumental in founding the Tri Delta chapter at UNC Chapel Hill where, sixty-eight years later, she recommended her granddaughter when she joined that chapter. Jeff married Norman B. Cotter in 1942. The couple moved to Charlotte with their two oldest sons in 1952. Upon arrival, she joined Myers Park United Methodist Church and the Ruth Fisher Sunday School class, later joining the Church Needlework Guild. She also taught Sunday school to preschoolers when her children were young. She and her husband joined Myers Park Country Club in 1956, where she was a founding member of the Friday Lunch Bunch. Jeff was also a long-time member of the Cross¬-Towners Garden Club. Besides being an avid golfer, Jeff enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished bridge player, activities that she enjoyed up until the last week of her life. She was blessed to have found love twice, with Norman Cotter and J. Clyde Allen, whom she married in 1992. She devoted her life to her three sons and only grandchild. Jeff is survived by her sons, N. David Cotter, and his wife, Gail, of Salt Lake City, UT, J. Leigh Cotter, and his wife, Dawn, of Charlotte, NC and Douglas V. Cotter, and his wife, Nancy, of Park City, UT; granddaughter, Alexandra Jeffress Cotter, of Charlotte, NC; brother, Joseph L. Vaughan, of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX. She is also survived by a step-family: a son, Roger Allen, and his wife, Cathi, of Hawaii and three grandchildren. A service to celebrate her life will be held 11:30 AM Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Myers Park United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Members of the Ruth Fisher Sunday school class will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Luther Snyder-Ruth Fisher Children's Christmas Fund at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Rd., Charlotte, NC, 28207, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
