Obituary of Frances Neely

Frances Miller Neely Mrs. Neely, of Charlotte, died on her 95th birthday, May 10, 2009, at Mecklenburg Health Care. She was born in Asheville, NC on May 10, 1914, daughter of the late Furman Z. and Edith White Miller. She moved to Charlotte and met and married the late, W. Hazel Neely in 1937. In 1941, during World War II, they relocated to Baltimore, MD, where they worked in the Glenn L. Martin airplane factory, building B-26 airplanes (The Widowmaker.) After the war in 1945, they moved back to the Steele Creek Community, and made their home on the Neely Family Farm. Mrs. Neely was a homemaker until 1960, when she went to work as the secretary of Nations Ford Elementary School until she retired in 1976. She was active in many organizations including, Mothers Club, Home Demonstration Club, and Church Circle. She was also active in her church, in the Community Bible Class at Steele Creek Presbyterian. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Neely was preceded in death by her brother and his wife, Frank E.J. and Carlyn Miller. She is survived by her sons, Walter H. Neely, Jr. and his wife Linda, and John M. Neely and his fiancé, June Harrelson; sister, Carolyn M. Welborn and her husband, Bob; sister-in-law, Ann T. Neely; and grandchildren, who affectionately knew her as, Bygumbie, Ellen Neely Thomas and her husband, Jonathan, and Walter H. Neely, III. A graveside service will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 7407 Steele Creek Rd. Charlotte, NC 28217, with Dr. W. Jeff Pinkston and Reverend Valerie H. Phillips, officiating. Mrs. Neely?s nephews, Jeff Miller, Stan Miller, Grier Neely, Kim Neely, Keith Welborn and Rodney Welborn will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. Memorials may be made to Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, 7404 Steele Creek Rd. Charlotte, NC 28217.
